Where the Quest Begins

A Microbrew Tour in Denver, Colorado

Coors brewery has made certain that people know its beers are made in Colorado; however, there are a number of microbreweries in the state that are lesser known but certainly worth exploring. In order to do so, head for LODO, or Lower Downtown Denver, to take a walking tour that will put you in touch with a number of microbreweries, with beer samples and a free pint once the tour is complete.

The Denver microbrewtour takes its customers for a mile and a half walk through the historic LODO district, providing beer trivia, samples and a coupon for a pint. The tour takes place every Friday and Saturday from three to five fifteen in the afternoon. As of this writing, the cost is 23 dollars, and you must purchase the ticket first from the website; however, whatever reservations people might have about making an advance purchase seems to fade away once they’ve taken the tour. It’s a great way for a couple to spend an afternoon and take in some of the sights of Denver. Even non-beer drinkers have shown up for the tour and had a good time; the free pint at the end of the tour comes to you in the form of a coupon at one of four breweries, which you may use at the time of the tour or on another day that you happen to be in town. One of the four breweries, the Great Divide Brewing Company last year, in September of 2009, was awarded three medals for its brews at the Great American Beer Festival. The microbrewery won the silver for Yeti Imperial Stout, and two bronzes for Old Ruffian Barley Wine and Hoss Rye Lager.

If you’re traveling through the mile high city, take a look at one of the luxury hotels Colorado has to offer. Out of the 164 hotels listed, you should be able to find a place in Denver that’s within walking or cab-distance of the microbrew, so that you may drink responsibly and enjoy yourself for the rest of the evening.
