The Substation in Singapore
It never takes long to see why Singapore is one of the most attractive spots for world travelers. There’s something exciting in every area, with lively mixes of cultures and traditions all over the island city state. Excellent visual arts and live performances are everywhere, and there’s a strong sense for innovation here. There’s also a strong sense for tradition, and with multiple cultures making up the population here, there is a respect for what has been done before. Indian cooking is always a delicate balance between innovation and tradition, where time-honored techniques have to be mastered before new ideas can work their way in. Singapore is one of the finest places in the world to taste fantastic Indian food, and it’s no surprise that there is a magnificent selection of Indian restaurants here.
There is a strong Indian population here, and a long history between the nations, and many of India’s regional delights are available. It’s a great opportunity to try some of the best in the world, and it’s the perfect beginning for a splendid evening on the town in Singapore. There’s a lot to see here, and it’s a city that opens up more and more with each exploration. If you’re looking for art, there are lots of large galleries, but there are also smaller spaces, and alternative venues, and things that can’t be noticed at first glance. One of the places to find art that’s hard to find is the Substation.
This is no secret, however, and not all that hard to find, but the programming is consistently edgy and interesting, and it’s one of the most interesting places to see new work in Singapore. It opened in 1990, and is driven by the artists and intellectuals who live here, looking to see new works of visual and performance art that push boundaries and ask important questions. Looking to work on the same level as the other art centers in the world’s large cultural capitals, the Substation is well on its way toward establishing itself as a premiere place for the disenfranchised artists doing the heavy lifting for this generation.
