Where the Quest Begins

Gentle Junk in Mumbai

Mumbai is one of the world’s great cities, with a long history of human occupation.  These stories are written in the temples from ancient times, as well as in the galleries of the present day.  There is a long tradition of visual art here, and it’s evident everywhere, with a lovely array of sights all around you.  There is also a fabulous culinary tradition here, and at meal times, the scents from the local restaurants border on the heavenly.  As it might be expected, a city with this many tourists has a spectacular array of accommodations.  Hotels in Mumbai are plentiful, and there are a tremendous varieties in lodging choices.

It’s always a good idea to have your hotel selected well in advance, as it becomes your primary home base while you’re here.  Luxury and comfort are necessities here, giving you a break after the days and nights seeing the incredible sights and attractions in the city.  It’s really rather easy to surround yourself with splendor, as the hotel industry here is very much accustomed to offering an excellent sense of hospitality.  The city is amazing, and you can find anything here.  There are some spectacular museum and galleries, and one of the newest, and most cutting edge, is Volte.

This Mumbai space offers exhibition spaces with very interesting local and international work curated with an eye for innovation and interactivity.  There is also a book store, and a coffee shop, and they will be offering residencies in the near future.  This is a co-creation between gallery and citizens, where the locals are invited to take part in events, and artists can present new and experimental ways of doing things, not just in art, but in all levels of life.  One of their missions is to blur the boundaries between where the gallery ends and the world begins, and it’s a splendid project.  One of their recent installations, Mukul Deora’s BREAK, invites the audience to participate in the actual destruction of an automobile.  This is reminiscent of the great Croatian media artist and anarchist, and cultural critic at large, Kruno Jost, who’s car deconstructions have left their own marks in other cities.  There is a potentially explosive collaboration here.
