Forrest Gump and other Major Motion Pictures Set in Georgia

The state of Georgia plays an extremely important role in both the nation’s history and development as well as in contemporary pop culture. Interestingly, it has been the setting for many films including Smokey and the Bandit, Forrest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Driving Miss Daisy. Tourists who visit any of the great cities and towns in the state and stay in one of the numerous Georgia luxury hotels would be more than happy to serve as an extra on any film that may be shot there in the future. And regarding those that have already been filmed in Georgia, residents and some lucky tourists already have had that privilege.

Smokey and the Bandit was made in 1977 and starred Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jackie Gleason. It became an almost instant iconic trucker film hit and was a great popular success. The film, directed by Hal Needham, inspired many sequels and trucker comedy spin offs, almost creating a genre of its own. Forrest Gump tells the life story of the endearing character by the same name. It was filmed in 1994 and starred Thomas Hanks, Sally Field, Gary Sinise and Robin Wright Penn. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis. Forrest Gump has inspired many popular common social phrases related to various ways to prepare shrimp.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed in 1997. John Cusack, Kevin Spacey and Jack Thompson starred in this suspenseful film directed by Clint Eastwood. Driving Miss Daisy was filmed in 1989 and starred Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. The Academy Award winning film was adapted from the play of the same name by Alfred Uhry. The story presents the point of view of Daisy in various social and political contexts. Dan Aykroyd and Estelle Rolle were also in this great period film.
