Where the Quest Begins

The Miraculous Pineapple of Kauai and Oahu

Pineapple is one of the many fruits that people associate with the exotic and tropical.  Hawaii is one of those exotic places.  Its warm climate full of beautiful rain, lush landscapes and gentle temperatures is the perfect place for pineapple.  A stay in Lanai hotels would not be complete without picking up a homemade batch of canned pineapple.  The reason it is so healthy a fruit stems from its source for Vitamins C and A.  It also has an enzyme—bromelain.  This supports digestion and it is employed to fight bronchitis.  Other problems with the respiratory system can also be fought with this miracle enzyme found in the humble pineapple.  The enzyme is a fantastic one because of how it interacts with proteins of any kind, breaking them into gelatin.  For people who bake, they already know the problem with this process.  Any recipe with gelatin is difficult to add pineapple to because of this.

Though a very sweet fruit, it is actually good for you as this medical proof demonstrates.  You have more excuses than ever to eat it.  Raw, sautéed with brown sugar, or simply as a fruit juice, pineapple is a great addition to any diet.  Further, if there are people worried about its sugar content, they only need to know that a little pineapple goes a long way in any food or diet plan to be an effective aid.

Though it looks nothing like an apple, the name does have a history that explains it origins.  When Christopher Columbus saw the fruit he thought it resembled a pine cone.  He tasted and briught the fruit back home in 1493 for his people to try out its sweet taste.  It made rounds to the English who thought the sweet taste was wonderful.  Because the apple was already a popular  sweet treat, Columbus  enhanced the name with the word apple in order to make the pineapple even more appealing to the culture at large.  Ever since then the name has stuck.  If you are ever on a Oahu vacation, packages of some of the pineapple there to take home with you is a must.  Its delightful taste, health benefits, and history will make the trip worth it.
