New York’s Bohemia
It’s the greatest city in the world. New York has attracted some of the sharpest minds and finest talents in the world for more than a century, and it’s one of the most exciting places to visit. There are hosts of attractions here that appeal to visitors of all ages, and there is an energy that is very personal and very vibrant. For travelers who like to set their own pace and timelines, or who have a complicated itinerary, or for larger groups, New York City car hire can answer a lot of problems.
Being able to get from one borough to another without having to depend on subways or buses, when time is short, is a very good thing in New York. Pace and timing is everything, and your own transportation can keep you in sync with the schedule you want. There are so many interesting things to see and do, and no doubt you will get advice from a hundred people, and more, if you ask the locals. But it’s worth checking our Greenwich Village while you’re here, to see what the next generation is doing. Greenwich Village has a fascinating history, as you might have guessed.
Its original name, as far as anyone can tell, was Sapokanician, when Native American people used it as a fishing village up until the 17th century. Dutch settlers took it over, and it was a fairly sleepy place until people started moving in during a cholera and yellow fever epidemic in the early part of the 19th century. It began to build up from there, with temporary housing turning into permanent housing, and by the beginning of the 20th century, it was on its way to establishing itself as a Bohemian paradise. From that time on, it’s enjoyed the reputation it has today, as one of the great world centers for artists and alternative cultures to find a home and make a mark on the world.
