Origins in Johannesburg
The people here are friendly and as we sat eating pancakes at the Pancake House in little Graskop, as happy and a little tipsy people rolled in all evening. Booze here is cheap, but the food here is killer and we love it. We decided though we could not eat twenty four seven thought we would try, and thought we had better feed our mind too. so ans we sat in the booth of the Pancake House and listened to a rising cacophony of voices that shambled in and ordered stack upon stacks of flap jacks and lakes of syrup and ladles of stewed fruit and tankers of coffee (now I am hungry again) we planned our trip to the Origins Centre. The Centre is situated at Wits University and tries to piece together the sometimes mysterious past of Africa and human evolution, which, after all, originated here. We would skip the luxury hotels Johannesburg has that beckon the traveler and delve into who we are where we come from. OK, then we will go to the luxury hotels. Wits turns out to be Witwatersrand (University of) and the purpose of the Centre is more or less for the advancement of anthropological studies in Africa and to educate the public as to our incredible heritage. the museums’ motto is most apt and thought provoking, “We are who we are because of who we are”. Over 150,000 years ago or more it is reckoned homo sapiens evolved in Africa, and we see the earliest examples of rock art, very strongly represented here at the museum, and beautifully presented. Alll in all this is a most recommended stop for the visitor to this ancient cradle of mankind, and a place to consider our intertwined past.
