Dubai
Dubai is one of the 7 emirates and it is the most populated city of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is situated along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf on the peninsula called the Arabian Peninsula. Sometimes referred to as Dubai city to distinguish it from the rest of the emirate. The city of Dubai existed over 100 years before the establishment of the UAE. Dubai shares its military, economic, legal and political functions with the surrounding emirates in a federal framework. Each emirate has its own jurisdiction over most functions such as civic law enforcement and financing to keep up local facilities. The largest population live in Dubai as compared to the rest of the emirates. Dubai and one other emirate posses veto power over critical matters of national importance. This is a modern city with some of the tallest buildings in the world and the most unusual architecture to be seen anywhere. Dubai has great wealth due to oil and construction reflects this from the 5 star Dubai hotel, to the sky scrapes filled with business people to the luxury residences and resorts there. Very little is know about the ancient history in this area in its pre-islamic days except that many ancient towns existed in the area and trade flourished between the Eastern and Western worlds. Near Dubai there has been a discovery of an ancient mangrove swamp dating back some 7000 years. In early years before Islam the people in the region worshiped Bajir and then was invaded by the Byzantine empire. In the early 19th century Dubai was established and remained independent until 1833. In 1820 the region signed peace treaty with the invading British forces and had to deal with their meddling in the area until the early 20th century. Dubai began a pearl business and was well know for its pearls until the 1930’s. Today Dubai is oil rich and country of great wealth.
