Where the Quest Begins

Baudelaire in Mauritius

Of all the glorious places in the world with five-star hotels, Mauritius might be the most beautiful.  It certainly has a premium on tropical island charm, and is in the middle of several cultures, with African, French, and Indian all having a long history here.  Our hotels situate you in the center of this paradise, offering some of the most magnificent accommodations in the world.  With a wide array of amenities and extras that meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry, our hotels have something to offer everyone.  We specialize in old-world charm, and adding island hospitality to the mix, and there’s a terrific recipe for rejuvenation of the senses.
Mauritius is a very interesting place, one will notice right away.  Besides its reputation for island life, excellent music, and lively night life, there is a cultural diversity here that is fascinating.  It doesn’t take much to imagine why people have been drawn to this island for so long, but it’s still worth looking at the traces of footprints here in its past.  From European culture, one of its famous visitors was the decadent poet Charles Baudelaire.
The nineteenth century French poet, critic, and author of Les Fleurs du Mal was only here for a short time, but it certainly influenced his writing, perhaps altering the course of literary history.      After sufficiently failing and disappointing his parents in multiple efforts to find a way to make a living, his stepfather sent him on a voyage to India.  When they stopped for repairs in Mauritius, Baudelaire jumped ship, and headed back to Paris.  This was a major turning point in his life, and the events that followed immediately thereafter were some of the most significant moments of his life, and worked their way into his already complex poetry.  It’s not likely that every guest here will experience such a radical turn in their life’s path after setting foot here, but there is certainly a romantic air in the cards, and other mysterious adventures await you…
