The Alnwick Garden of Northumberland
The forgotten and derelict site of the Alnwick Garden was redesigned and cared for by the Duchess of Northumberland. Due to her enthusiasm and incredible vision the project for renovation began. This all started just about ten years ago. This region is well known for the flowers that surround the city, from the hotels, Northumberland and the city streets, and this public garden is where it all comes together in a vibrant and beautiful place for families to picnic and runners and bikers to zip through town.
All of this is surrounded by brilliant architectural structures, artistic sculpture gardens, and the life of the water. Gardeners themselves come to the Alnwick for inspiration in design and botany. This is a contemporary garden set in a traditional city. One of the largest collections of plants indigenous to all of Europe is here in the Ornamental garden section. And set amongst the wide variety of tree and plant life is the Poison Garden, exhibiting the ways in which plants take care of themselves.
There are many different styles, in the plants themselves as well as the design, and the gardeners working on the grounds are always willing and ready to talk about gardening and answer any questions. There are many activities that take place in the garden as well, this is the perfect spot for those traveling with children. Water moves through the Serpent garden, and children can get wet and play on tractors and run through water jet streams.
The Bamboo Labyrinth is the perfect place for a hide and seek and the rope bridges in the Tree-house provide hours of fun and adventure for those with creative imaginations. Whatever the season there is always something in bloom. From springtime blossoms to the fruits of autumn. The garden is owned by the charity of Alnwick Garden Trust, and they are continuing with fundraising efforts to ensure that garden will remain well cared for from here on out.
