Winter Art Season in Perth, Australia
For those traveling to the Outback, book early the accommodations in the Perth hotels. Australia may be just heading in to their winter season, but that does mean it is the slow season. For when the sun is not so bright, the live shows and the art scene of the city comes to life. There are many options to chose from during the next three months as many are swapping their swimming suits, for tuxedos and fancy gowns. Be it for a gallery opening, a night at the opera or the theater, or and number of musical concerts and dance performances that are scheduled. The creation of the “Winter Arts Season” in Perth was the brainchild of Alan Dodge in 2005. Dodge had been a director of an art gallery when he suggested to the museums, the galleries, and the various companies involved in the performing arts, that they too, should create a winter program such as the one in St. Petersburg.
Dodge found support in one of the chairwomen of the Symphony and well know patron for the arts, Janet Holmes. Holmes stated that it was a great way to expose people to the number of programs and activities that occur during the winter months. Many were under the assumption that Perth was a cultural wasteland, and Holmes retorted saying that she could not find the time to get to all the musical productions she wanted to get to, and people needed to become more aware of the options for entertainment that were available.
Shows this winter include an exhibition at the WA Museum of over eight hundred articles donated by Nick Cave, (http://www.nick-cave.com/)his lyrics, photos, and notebooks. This gives those fans of the dark and mysterious performer insight into the work that he has been creating for more than thirty years. And just next door, the WA Art Gallery is paying homage to the designers of THING. In the theaters around town, avant garde performances from companies in London, play along side those performing Shakespeare. The Sydney Theatre Company is putting up “The Duel”, while the Northbridge Theatre begins their winter season with the well known work, “Much Ado About Nothing”. The Ballet and the Opera have outstanding line-ups as well, beginning with “Romeo and Juliet”. And throughout the city, new works are being presented as well. This may not be the time to travel to Perth to go surfing, but it is definitely the time to experience the talent and the arts.
