Transportation In Mumbai
Mumbai has the same headaches as any huge city still growing faster than it’s infrastructure. Adding to that is the fast growing income of it’s residence also caused a new dilemma, more cars on the already over congested roads. Palace Hotel India states tourism to be the fastest growing industry in India bringing in thousands a day around the world to experience all of what India can give them. So, how can a person get around to see the enigma of India with out getting all stressed from the gridlock? Simple, India still has one of the best transportation systems in the world! The public bus system, suburban electric trains, auto rickshaws and the always interesting waterways. India’s got you covered. Just leave earlier to get to your destination.
The public bus system is superior to most United States systems. India invested most of the public funds to this mode of transportation. 88% of Mumbai commuters use the public bus system. That’s impressive. Considering that the standard of living is on the rise and consumers are purchasing more and more automobiles. The reason for high use of the public bus system is simple, it’s efficient and safer. Mumbai is working on expanding the service in the rural areas of India due to more and more farmers leaving the rural life for a more lucrative life in the big city. The lure of better paying jobs though has caused the gridlock to grow. A conundrum indeed.
One way Mumbai tried to fix the transportation issues is the suburban electric train. It plays a very important part in the development of not only Mumbai, but the whole of India. It has one of the largest and busiest networks in the world. It also is one of the biggest employers. Over 1.6 million are on the Indian Railways payroll. So, the transportation has two benefits for the people of India. Transportation and work!
I would like to travel by water, but of course water can’t take you to too many places. It’s very limited. Where is does take you though, will be more interesting. The Inland Waterways Authority are ambitious about aiding in the reduction of Mumbai’s congestion. They are tauting to the public that it’s a cleaner way to travel and environmentally friendly. They are promoting the travel time to be less for passengers for many important destinations. The Waterways are gaining more cargo clients as well. The water resources are being used, but it is costly to make it efficient.
I find just walking around to be the best way of experiencing the local flavor or taking an auto rickshaw. Just remember, when in Mumbai, take your time, don’t be in a hurry and you’ll have the best experience ever.
