Where the Quest Begins

The Million Deed Challenge in Singapore

The celebration for the inauguration of an idea, occurred at the Jurong Regional Library of Singapore.  This is one of the responses and aspects of the 2010 Junior Olympics to be held in the country during the month of August.  GraceFu of the National Development and Education Board, came up with the idea and announced it during a rap concert on March 17, 2009.  The TW Rappers is the group that accompanied Ms. Fu .  Made up of 5 teenage girls, the rappers performed their piece, songs about being polite in the library.  This has been a program launched by other teenagers, inspired by the Junior Olympics, focusing on the friendship and respect to those of other cultures, and the values of the strive for excellence these students share with those that will be competing.

Originally launched on a Facebook page, groups of teenagers in Singapore are enacting these acts of generosity and kindness in everyday life.  Not much effort is necessary to perform these simple acts of kindness.  Some are just giving their seats on the train to an elderly passenger, or thanking one working in five star hotels Singapore for helping them with their luggage or clearing their plates after a meal in the restaurants.  The chairman for the Youth Olympics committee, Ng Ser Miang states that it is small deeds such as these that serve to further express the values and the aims of the challenge.  Some of the students are taking a bit of time to help others in their school subjects or in returning their library books for them.
And this has been extending outside the classroom, in that students are beginning to realize environmental issues as well, cleaning up the streets as they walk home from school.  These deeds are then added to theFacebook list.  Within the first day the site was launched, from the one school…more than one hundred entries were made to the list.  With three more months to go before the games begin, and with news of the site going international, it looks like these young people will make their goal.
