Where the Quest Begins

Nueu Galerie, NYC

Of the many museums and galleries in New York City, one specializes in the Austrian and German designers and artists of the early 20th century and that is the Neue Galerie.  Fine art and decorative art fill two different floors, and feature works from Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Alfred Kubin and of architects such as Joseph Urban and Adolf Loos.  The focus, along with the simple displaying of the fine artists, is to present to the public how special the connection was at that time, between the creation of the works that are considered ‘fine art’, and the relationship the fine artists had with the designers.

The Nueu Galerie was the creation of two friends, friends who had appreciated the arts together for almost thirty years.  One was an art dealer and the other a collector, a businessman and a philanthropist.  Serge Sabarsky and Ronald Lauder were committed to this art from this period and had the dream to one day open a museum dedicated to exhibition of the best of this work.  Sabarsky, in 1996, passed away, and Lauder went on with the dream.  This gallery is a tribute and memorial to his dear friend.

The building that houses the museum is located in a section of the city close to the four star New York hotels and galleries known as Museum Mile.  The same firm that built the New York Public Library were also the architects of the this building, and it was finished in 1914.  It is considered by many to be one the distinguished and elegant buildings ever built on 5th Avenue.  And it was recently designated an historical landmark.  Many ’society’ people have owned the building previously, and it was once used as a research center.  The two did have the building renovated , keeping with the historic integrity, but also updating aspects of the interior so as to make it one of the finest places to display, and to view their incredible collection.
