Where the Quest Begins

Things to Do in New York City

With the economy in free fall, those that can afford a vacation are looking closer to home. The shorter the distance, the cheaper the bottom line.  While New York City isn’t one of the most economical destinations in the US, for people living in and near the city, it’s an ideal vacation spot, provided you do your research in advance to find the best value at the best prices.

Many New York hotels are offering great packages for Spring travel right now. Considering taking one of the luxury New York hotel suites for just one night and experience the finer life of celebrities and socialites. Or indulge in a meal at one of the city’s five star restaurants. Limiting yourself to one luxury experience can be an entire getaway all by itself.

The museums of New York are always a good way to spend a day, especially if you’ve never done so before. Most have their own cafe so you literally don’t have to leave the building until closing time. Some offer free lectures, films, and even have discount or free visiting hours.

If Broadway’s big show are outside your price range, look into productions Off-Broadway or even Off-Off-Broadway where quality plays are available at a fraction of the cost. You can also get same-day tickets for some Broadway shows at ridiculously reduced price, but you have to be at the right place at the right time. Some of the concerts and plays in CentralPark are free, so watch for those options.

Speaking of Central Park and free, it costs nothing to wander through the park, watching people, enjoying the greenery and admiring the gardens, statues, and lakes. Likewise, a trip through Times Square costs nothing — as long as you avoid the lure of the theme restaurants and shops. Of course, window-shopping can be enjoyable a well. Stroll along Fifth Avenue and daydream about items in the window display. The Staten Island Ferry is also free and offers stunning views of the cityscape.
